If you are thinking about Veterinary Medicine as a career, ECO is happy to have you ride along with us so you can appreciate what an equine ambulatory veterinary practice is like. We allow undergraduate students shadow our practice for a few days when space allows. Priority is given to current veterinary students, however when we have room, we are happy to have you come along as well. Typical visits are often for a few days to a week. If you are interested in a different length of stay, a special request must be made and will be considered on an individual basis. Please fill out the appropriate application (links are below) and be sure to let us know the dates you have in mind (note, December and January are unavailable due to holidays, vacations, and a relatively low volume of appointments).
ECO is an ambulatory practice, so there are few things to keep in mind. First, we generally try to arrive at our first appointment between 8 and 9 AM, so you may be asked to meet us at the clinic anywhere from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM, depending on the day. We may occasionally arrange to meet you at a different location, however this will be done in advance of your visit. Also, plan to ride with us for the entire day. When our days are fully scheduled, it is possible that we won’t return to the clinic until after 5 PM, and if we end up with a few emergency calls, it could be significantly later than that. Saturday and Sunday appointments are emergencies-only, so it is not possible for you to ride with us on the weekends. And please remember to bring weather-appropriate apparel depending on what time of year you are shadowing. Proper attire includes trousers or jeans, a collared shirt such as a polo shirt, and closed-toe shoes such as paddock boots or sneakers (winter clothing such as warm boots, insulated bib overalls like Carhartt’s, hats, and mittens may all be necessary during the colder months). The length of our day varies so be sure to bring yourself lunch, snacks, and beverages.
